On an average, how many bees will it take to make a pound?

Let’s assume you mean worker bees. Queens and drones are larger than the workers and it would take correspondingly fewer bees to constitute a pound but as you will be buying a 2 pound package that will contain mostly workers and a few drones, let’s work from that basis. The weight will also vary with the race as the size of different races varies.

Mr. M. J. Nolan conducted studies in which he found that the average weight of samples taken from 45 packages was 135.85 milligrams per bee or 3,337 bees per pound. Other studies have determined average weights both higher and lower than that but as your package bees were probably pretty well fed at the time of packaging or just after, an average number of bees per pound of package bees is probably somewhere in the neighborhood of 3500.
